There are a number of symptoms which could suggest your exhaust is about to fail.
#1 An unusually loud exhaust making hissing or knocking sounds.
Often the first sign of vehicle exhaust failure is an unusually loud exhaust. Should your exhaust become damaged or corroded, the resulting leak causes the engine to become much louder than usual. The exhaust may produce a hissing, knocking or rattling sound, often becoming more pronounced as you accelerate.
#2 The smell of raw fuel from the exhaust.
Another common symptom is a noticeable exhaust smell. This is usually due to a damaged or leaking exhaust pipe, causing petrol or diesel fumes to find their way into the car via the various vent systems. Meanwhile, should there be a leak in the exhaust system itself, an unpleasant rotten egg smell can indicate there is a problem with the catalytic converter.
#3 Decreased power, acceleration, and fuel efficiency.
A drop in engine performance is another key indicator of exhaust failure. Damaged or corroded pipes can cause exhaust leaks, ultimately leading to performance issues, such as decreased power, acceleration, and fuel efficiency. The latter is caused as the engine is forced to work harder than usual to produce power; therefore, if you notice you are using more fuel than normal, a faulty exhaust could be the culprit.
#4 The exhaust has dropped low or dragging on the ground.
A more serious symptom is hanging or dragging exhaust pipes, which must be fixed immediately. They are not only a danger to you, but should they fall off, they become a danger to other motorists around you.
What is the cause of vehicle exhaust failure?
There are a number of factors which contribute to vehicle exhaust failure. Speed bumps and curbs are common contributors, often resulting in low hanging or dragging pipes. Driving through deep water can also cause harmful damage as it rapidly cools your catalytic converter. However, age remains the most common cause for exhaust system failure, ultimately leading to corrosion and deterioration. This is exactly why recommend you check your exhaust at least once a year or every 60,000 miles. Our exhaust visual inspection is completely free, checking for any physical damage, leaking joints and corrosion. We even offer advice should any work need to be carried out!
